A Rainy-Day Romance Turned Perfectly Timed Surprise

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a New York wedding photographer, it’s that proposals have their own magic—and their own set of logistical gymnastics. You want the big “WOW” moment, but you also want your partner to be photo-ready (hair done, nails done, and an outfit they love). And sometimes, you have to pray the weather will play along.

That was exactly the case for Greg and Jess’ Proposal Shoot at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park.


Located in the heart of Oyster Bay, Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park is this sprawling, historic Long Island gem—filled with lush gardens, tree-lined pathways, and Gilded Age architecture that practically begs to be photographed. As a Long Island wedding photographer, I adore shooting here because every corner feels like a scene from a romantic film. Even on overcast days, the grounds seem to glow.


Planning the Perfect Distraction

Greg is a close friend, so when he reached out at the end of April with his plan, I knew we were in for something special. The idea? Stage a “casual” photoshoot with a few friends, and somewhere along the way, he’d drop down on one knee. Easy, right? Well… not quite.

The weather forecast was taunting us in the days leading up. Cloudy skies, possible showers—exactly the kind of conditions that can make a proposal day feel like a gamble. On the actual day, it rained in the morning and afternoon, but by some stroke of luck, the moment my wife and I pulled into the park around 5:00 PM… the skies cleared.


The Moment It Happened

We hadn’t even made it far into our walk before Greg decided—no time like the present. He stopped, turned to Jess, and the world seemed to pause for just a moment. Then came the big question.

Now, here’s the twist: Jess wasn’t surprised. Greg and our friends, without even realizing it, had been dropping tiny hints all day. But honestly? That didn’t make it any less beautiful. Her reaction was pure joy—big smiles, happy tears, and that glow that only comes when you know you’ve found your forever person.

After the big “yes,” we spent about 90 minutes wandering the park. The late afternoon light peeked through the clouds, giving us this soft, romantic glow that felt like it was made for editorial and timeless portraits. Greg and Jess were absolute naturals—laughing, holding hands, sneaking kisses in between shots.
